Event Details

“ADAPTED” is a heartfelt and intimate adventure documentary about grief and recovery after traumatic spinal-cord injury. The film follows three individuals with paralysis determined to reclaim their connection to nature as each embarks on a daring and personal adventure with the hope of finding new ways to access places that make them feel most alive.

Anna Soens attempts to become the first paraplegic athlete to summit Mt. Baker, a towering 10,781-foot glaciated volcano in Washington State. Josh Hancock leads a custom adaptive raft down the wild, scenic Salmon River in Idaho. Danielle Doelling trains to hand-cycle 87 miles across the rugged terrain of the White Rim Trail, in the Canyonlands National Park, Utah.

While the love for adventure is their shared pursuit, each of their stories reveals a deeper journey—one of resilience, hardship, and self-discovery. ADAPTED showcases unique ways that individuals with paralysis can access the outdoors and celebrates the incredible capacity of the human spirit to forge new horizons, even after life-altering setbacks. At its heart, the film reminds us that our connection with nature—and the daring adventures we undertake there—reflect who we are and awaken something universal within us.

Film Features and Event Partners

Voices & Motion

VP, Marketing

Voices & Motion was born from a simple belief: a disability may change how someone moves through the world, but it does not diminish their joy, purpose, courage, or capacity to live an extraordinary life. People with disabilities deserve to be seen in the fullness of their lives - through their relationships, adventures, humor, resilience, passions, and dreams. That belief is at the heart of Adapted the film, a documentary created to challenge the limited stories society often tells about disability. Through honest
storytelling and lived experience, the film invites audiences to see beyond a diagnosis, a wheelchair, or an assumption - and to recognize the whole person.

Josh Hancock

Writer, Executive Producer, Environmental Engineer, Featured Athlete

Josh Hancock is a white water rafter, skier, surfer, and cyclist who uses a wheelchair to get around. Born in Rochester, New York, but living in Bend, OR, Hancock works as an environmental engineer. He sustained a T12 complete spinal-cord injury in 2014, while ice climbing and nearly lost his life. Since his accident, he has innovated new ways to access wilderness areas by raft, and become an accomplished trip leader rowing rivers across the country. This is Josh’s first film.

Austin Nicassio

Accessible Off-Road Founder

Austin Nicassio is the founder of Accessible Off-Road (AOR), a Southern California nonprofit increasing outdoor access for the disabled community. After he became disabled in 2022, an all-terrain track chair brought him back to the trails, and he set out to open that door for others. AOR partners with land managers to expand access to trails and beaches, and builds awareness through its online community. An aerospace engineer by trade, Austin brings a systems approach to making the outdoors accessible.

Ana Soens

Sr. Director of Product Marketing

Anna Soens has pioneered a new way of mountaineering for adaptive athletes. Born in South Korea but living in Bend, OR, Soens works as a wildlife biologist for the US Fish & Wildlife. She sustained a T12 incomplete spinal-cord injury in 2015 from an indoor climbing fall. Since her accident she has become the first female with paraplegia to summit Mount Hood, OR. She has been featured in several films for her accomplishments including The Approach. However, ADAPTED is her first feature-length film.

Danielle Doelling

Sr. Director of Product Marketing

Danielle Doelling is an accomplished world class athlete and passionate advocate for disability justice. Born in Long Island New York but living in Bend, OR, Doelling works as an occupational hand therapist. She sustained a T4 complete spinal-cord injury in 2011 from a rock-climbing fall of nearly 300 feet. This is Doellings’s first film that she has shared her story in.
